Vladimír Šucha
From 2002 to 2004, he served as the Head of the European Commission Representation in the Slovak Republic. Starting in 2012, he took on the role of Director of the Joint Research Centre, which is the European Commission's scientific and knowledge service. Prior to that, he spent six years as a Director at the European Commission's Directorate-General for Education and Culture. From 2005 to 2006, he was instrumental in establishing the Slovak Research and Development Agency. He holds a full professorship in Slovakia and has been a visiting professor/researcher at various academic institutions abroad. He also served as an expert for UNESCO for one year. He is currently a visiting professor at the European University Institute in Florence. To date, he has published over 100 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals.

For the first time, technology is entering us and changing us from within.Until now, technology has existed outside of man and has affected him only slowly and indirectly. Today we can see that technology is causing a person's inner change.
The degree of impact of megatrends on society is so intense that nothing but a series of transformations will help us. It will not be easy, because one naturally resists change. The skills to anticipate and see things ahead, along with building flexibility and resilience, will be fundamental pillars of surviving the great changes that lie ahead.

Data4Policy
New technologies are generating large amounts of data available for analysis and allow for faster interchange of knowledge and massive opening up of research results, data and information which can be used to underpin policy development. The potential of data and big data for public policy is considerable. The possibility of using new and big data sources to "nowcast" socio and economic phenomena rather than wait for official statistics to be produced may contribute to much more reflexive and adaptive public policies. The ability to combine and correlate data sets on different phenomena opens up the possibility of better understanding the complex wicked problems that we increasingly face. However, while we have seen many interesting use-cases emerge for big data in the private sector, we have many fewer use-cases for public policy.
In this presentation, Vladimír Šucha, Director General of the European Commission´s Joint Research Centre, will share his views on what can be done in order to better use this potential.
