DISCUSSION "Talent and Quality of Life: Why People Choose to Stay in the City" (30 min)
Why do people stay in a city, and what discourages them? A discussion about Bratislava showed that the key factors are quality schools, chances for good jobs, and affordable housing. The city has more options than it might seem — from public transport to the zoning plan. Slovakia ranks among the EU countries with the highest share of students abroad; roughly a fifth of university students leave. At the same time, after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, the number of international students here increased significantly, especially from Ukraine. The issue is therefore not only about departures, but also about how to work with those who stay or arrive. Alongside mobility, weaker inclusion is apparent: young people with disabilities or from socially disadvantaged backgrounds often do not enter the higher education system at all. We thus lose part of the domestic potential that could fill missing capacities. Talent management therefore also means better inclusion of these groups.From “brain drain” to talent management
