The European AI Act introduces clear rules for the use of artificial intelligence, while also emphasizing a balance between safety and innovation. A talk by Petr Hanzlík of DXC Technology showed what this means for public administration and why it’s important to start preparing now. The key requirements will fully apply in 2026.

AI regulations in brief

The AI Act is not a standalone law, but part of a comprehensive European framework complemented, for example, by rules for digital markets and services and data protection. An example of the reach of regulation is Apple’s decision to temporarily not bring Apple Intelligence to the EU, in connection with the Digital Markets Act. The AI Act is based on a unified OECD definition of AI to avoid ambiguity about what counts as an artificial intelligence system. The goal is simple: technologies must be safe for citizens, but must not stifle innovation.
