Attack vectors are multiplying and they won't be diminishing. Defense therefore needs clear rules, technical solutions, and continuous monitoring, not just papers in a drawer. Artificial intelligence helps with big data, but a competent human team remains decisive.

From chaos to incident management

Every year, new paths emerge by which an attacker can get into a system, and with the growing complexity of software this space only expands. Therefore, it's not enough for each department to cobble together defense “ad hoc” – a unified framework is needed that defines responsibilities, processes, and response scenarios. Cybersecurity laws and their European transpositions aim in this direction, but practice cannot stay on paper. Real readiness means having processes and the technical support to carry them out in real time.

We can defend ourselves only against what we can see. While traditional endpoint protection shows only a fraction of what is happening, extended detection and response (XDR) links data from workstations, networks, or e‑mails and assembles them into a coherent picture of the attack. In practice, this means we see not only the malicious process on the computer, but also that it arrived by e‑mail, what it did in the network, and where it tried to move. Such visibility does not guarantee absolute security, but it significantly increases the chance to recognize and stop an attack in time.

Since there is too much data and too few people, continuous oversight in the form of managed security services is key. Their benefit lies mainly in shortening response time: without advanced monitoring, an attacker can remain in the system for an average of 278 days, internal oversight can cut that to hours, and a specialized service to tens of minutes. The sooner you see an incident, the less damage it causes and the cheaper the remediation. Technology without service is blind and service without data is short‑sighted – both are necessary.

AI in security: a strong servant, a weak master

Artificial intelligence can sift through large volumes of logs and propose the most probable explanation of an incident, which saves time and resources. However, it is not infallible: on a simple logic task, different models confidently gave different yet equally wrong answers. An AI output is a statistical estimate, not a verdict – it always needs expert review and context. Sensible deployment therefore combines automation with human oversight that can decide when to trust the machines and when to pull the handbrake.

This leads to the final lesson: education is a continuous process across the entire organization. Not only specialists, but also accountants, marketers, and managers must know the basic risks and, for example, recognize phishing‑type fraud. Regular training, simulations, and tailored training increase a company’s resilience just as reliably as new tools. Technology strengthens you, but prepared people will decide whether you survive an attack without fatal consequences.
