The pandemic showed that without connected systems, hospitals will remain in survival mode. Smart operating rooms demonstrate that interoperable data can save energy, shorten wait times, and improve patient safety. A specific project with independent verification showed a rapid return on investment and a lower incidence of infections. During the crisis, one-way routes, access control, and strict ventilation rules were introduced, but the connections between systems were often missing. The key is interoperability: security, energy, and technical systems must share data so that joint decision-making makes sense. When the data from these “islands” are collected into a single data lake, the hospital can coordinate ventilation, zoning, and the movement of people according to the current risk.
