Hospitals often fail to fully harness the talent of their people because departments and job titles tie them down. British innovator John Lodge, now Director of Innovation at London’s King’s College Hospital, therefore created Hexitime together with doctors in the NHS – a time bank and digital marketplace for skills. The aim is to move capabilities to where they are needed right now, without additional costs and with higher employee engagement. After a career as a military engineer, Lodge moved into healthcare and discovered that despite extensive experience he had to start in lower positions and perform simple tasks. He saw the same sense of untapped talent among colleagues whom organizations delineated by departments and titles — a radiologist is “just” a radiologist, a technician “just” a technician. The result is dissatisfaction and disengagement: Gallup research shows that roughly 80% of employees worldwide are unable to bring their full potential to work, which costs the global economy trillions of dollars and hurts profitability, increases turnover, and undermines safety in healthcare. Paradoxically, organizations then seek help from outside, even though they often already have the necessary skills internally — they just don’t know it.Why we miss out on people’s potential
