AI for the People: Unveiling the Potential of Language Models and AI in Denmark's Public Sector

The talk will offer a critical examination of integrating AI in public services in a Danish context. It will explore strategic approaches for a unified, responsible adoption of this technology across national administrative bodies, and how it can shape a future-ready, transparent public sector.

Generative AI is the next logical step in Denmark’s digitalization, but the country lacks an open and reliable model for the Danish language. The public sector is therefore grappling not only with opportunities but also dilemmas—from the ownership and operation of models to privacy and performance. The talk summarized where AI makes sense and what decisions lie ahead for policymakers and public agencies.

Why this matters right now

While large commercial systems like chat models exist today, public institutions in Denmark lack an open Danish language model they can safely deploy internally. For small language markets, it is difficult to obtain enough high‑quality data, and they are not a priority business for the major players. Generative AI thus presents both an opportunity and a problem: without their own infrastructure, there is a risk of dependence on vendors and the associated “vendor lock‑in.” Even so, it is a natural continuation of the state’s successful digitalization.
