From Regulation to Capability: Europe’s Path to Digital Sovereignty (6 min)

Europe is betting on digital sovereignty: it wants to innovate while protecting security, values and strategic autonomy. In Bratislava, a vision was presented of how to connect research, businesses and the single market with concrete investments and rules for trustworthy artificial intelligence. The goal is for the European Union to remain master of its digital fate.

Digital sovereignty: from vision to action

The core of the strategy is a technological sovereignty package, adopted on 3 June, aimed at strengthening European control over chips, the cloud, artificial intelligence and open-source software. It’s not just about regulation, but about the ability to steer its own digital future without compromising on security and rights. In the AI era, this is key to the resilience of critical infrastructures and alignment with European values. The Union claims it has all the ingredients for leadership — strong research, innovators, talent and the single market — and must connect and scale them quickly.
