Agentic AI: From Assistants to Autonomous Agent Systems (7 min)

Igor Bandurič - , Atos Slovakia ·

For a long time, artificial intelligence played the role of an assistant - answering questions, suggesting texts, helping with code. Today, however, it is turning into something different: digital workers capable of planning, making decisions, and executing tasks autonomously across entire processes. The first results are visible in software development. AI agents are already writing code, testing, fixing bugs, and handing off work to each other. But this is just the beginning. The same principle of agent teams collaborating under human oversight can be applied to IT operations, customer service, invoice processing, or client onboarding. Companies already understand that it works. The challenge is how to move from a pilot into real operations - without losing control, without security risks, and with measurable outcomes.Atos offers a concrete answer - Sovereign Agentic Studio: a structured approach to designing, deploying, and safely scaling agents in live operations. Not as an experiment, but as a standard part of how a business runs.

Over the past year, our way of working with AI has shifted from chatting in the browser and manual „copy–paste“ to agents who can not only propose but also verify their own suggestions. Agentic AI triggers steps, evaluates results, and iterates, so the human monitors only the direction and the end result. But that brings questions of security, rights, and responsibility—in other words, the need for good brakes.

From copy-paste to agents

A year ago, we used AI by manually transferring its suggestions into target tools and feeding the result back. An agent removes this middle layer: it’s a wrapper around the model that can execute the proposed procedure on its own, get feedback, and assess whether it was a good step. It then iterates – tries further steps, compares, learns from mistakes – and if it encounters uncertainty, it requests human approval according to the configured rules. The human thus steers the direction and boundaries, while the agent does the work.
