The Role of Molecular Diagnostics in today´s cancer care

Caroline Rosseel - Senior Medical Affairs, Thermo Fisher Scientific ·

In this presentation, we will discuss how advancements in oncology (solid tumor and hematological malignancies) have created new diagnostic needs and how next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology can effectively meet these demands to improve patient care.

Molecular diagnostics is the key to ensuring personalized oncology delivers on its promise. The lecture showed that without fast, accurate, and accessible tests, patients will not reach the right treatment in time. This is especially true in countries where access to testing is uneven.

Why diagnostics determines outcomes today

Personalized medicine relies on identifying the right biomarker and selecting targeted therapy accordingly. A 2021 European review showed that in Slovakia, access to both single-biomarker and multibiomarker testing is uneven across regions. At the same time, we are among the countries with fewer reimbursed targeted therapies, which limits the use of precision diagnostics in practice. Without equal access for all patients, we lose time and the chance for a better treatment outcome.
