IGNITE SESSION: Applications of AI in Medical Imaging

Peter Drotár - , Technical University of Košice ·

One of the most promising areas of AI is its use in medical imaging, where it has the potential to radically transform diagnostic processes, improve diagnostic accuracy and reduce the time needed to evaluate imaging studies. This presentation will provide an overview of the current state of AI technology in medical imaging, including the latest advances, challenges and opportunities these technologies bring.
The main goal is to show how AI can help doctors better recognize and interpret medical images, thereby improving the quality of patient care. We will present case studies, the results of our research, and discuss important results that have been achieved in areas such as radiology.

Artificial intelligence in medical imaging is moving from promises to practical solutions. A lecture by Petra Drotára presented four case studies that show where AI is already helping today and where it still runs into limits. Collaboration with physicians, who are increasingly open to technology, is key.

AI as an aid in diagnosing from X-rays

The most straightforward task is distinguishing diseases from images, for example telling COVID pneumonia apart from other inflammations or healthy lungs on X-rays. The model returns a probable diagnosis and also provides a hint of an explanation, indicating which areas it "looked" at when making the decision. This interpretation is still in its infancy, and therefore serves more as an orientational aid for the physician. The goal is decision support, not replacing clinical expertise.
