Innovative biocompatible materials

Tomáš Gregor - , AT Crystals ·

The project was focused on Innovative bio-compatible materials based on sapphire monocrystals for use in healthcare, which was co-financed in the Innovation Vouchers - Healthy Society 2.0 call within the eligible area: B. materials and biomaterials for healthcare and eligible activities: B.2. Development of biocompatible materials, including compounds of special metals and other implants.

AT Crystals, led by Tomáš Gregor, develops technologies for producing large-format monocrystals and is looking for new applications for them. Thanks to an innovation voucher, the team has moved into medicine: from sapphire implants to a surgical instrument with a transparent blade. The ultimate goal is a smart scalpel that will increase the precision and safety of procedures.

From large monocrystals to medicine

AT Crystals is developing technology for producing large-format monocrystals—technical materials with high purity and stability. While conventional processes limit the size of the resulting crystals, their solution delivers substantially larger formats with high quality and better material utilization thanks to suitable product geometry. So far, the materials have been used mainly in laser technology and in protective or ballistic glass. Under the innovation voucher, the team focused on medicine, where it sees great potential for new applications.
