WAR IN UKRAINE ALREADY COVERES CYBER THREATS, WE CAN'T WAIT FOR SOMETHING HAPPENS
The government unit CSIRT.SK takes care of the cyber security of the state. Worse situation, however, is in the health care sector, which has no money for technology or people who can work with it.
Cyber-attacks are no novelty in Slovak conditions. As a large part of people's and the state's activities transferred to the online space, cyber incidents are a daily threat. In the context of current events brought about by the war in Ukraine, the question justifiably arises as to whether we are prepared in Slovakia, whether we are a cyber-safe country and whether we can adequately respond to various potential threats. As cyber security is an extremely current and important area, we will address it in several panels at our traditional Spring ITAPA 2022 conference. Cyber incidents are among the top three dangers in most countries. The resolution of cyber incidents in the state and public administration environment is the task of the government unit for the resolution of computer incidents, the so-called CSIRT.SK. It operates in accordance with the Cyber Security Act. The aim of the unit is to respond to security incidents aimed at public administration information technologies. At the same time, it eliminates the consequences of incidents, restores the operation of systems and also provides preventive and educational activities.
Private companies from various sectors are a separate chapter. Some years invest a lot of money in cybersecurity, others rely solely on antivirus software. Financial sector, banks are excellently protected against attacks, small and medium-sized enterprises do not have the necessary knowledge or experience in working with technology. However, healthcare is the worst case. On the one hand, it lacks money to buy appropriate technology, but even if they were available, there is no one to work with them. This is a huge problem. At the same time, countless sensitive data flows daily within the healthcare system.
What needs to be done to improve the situation? To be well prepared for a number of potential cyber-attacks? We should not wait for something to happen, but act so that we prevent attacks and threats and be truly prepared. There are solutions; you just need to find a way to implement them in specific segments. Postponing it and waiting for something to happen is definitely not the solution.
